The War in Sudan, and the Nigeria government's response. - Chikeluba

Image
4th from left: President Buhari 2nd from left: Geoffrey Onyeama, Nigeria's Foreign affairs minister. The North Eastern African country of Sudan has been embroiled in crises for a long period of time, with the recent being a face-off between two Generals who previously enjoyed ecstatic bromance that ousted the administration of former President Omar al-Bashir.  The present scenario can be likened to a coalition of two male lions in the struggle for territorial acquisition, took down the dominant male in a pride, then resorted to internal squabble and bickering, resulting in a fight for supremacy. Of the two warring Generals, one is a career soldier, in the person of General Abdel Fatta al-Burhan of the Sudanese army, and the other is a street General, by name Mohammed Hamdan Dagalo, the leader of the Rapid Support Forces (RSF), who came to prominence through unconventional means. Gen. Dagalo               Gen. Burhan The saying that whe...

Zelenskyy's invitation to Tinubu - Chikeluba

Image
Any body who understands and follows political activities on the global stage would no doubt make interpretation as regards the invitation of the Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy to Senator Bola Tinubu, Nigeria's President-elect, to visit Ukraine after his inauguration on May 29th.  The flawed 25th February 2023, Presidential election in Nigeria has constrained responsible world leaders from outrightly putting forth congratulatory messages to Sen. Tinubu. Uptill now, the US President Joe Biden is yet to personally congratulate the Nigeria's President-elect, days and weeks after the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) declared the former Lagos State governor on the platform of the ruling All Progressive Congress (APC), as winner of the polls with Alhaji Atiku Abubakar of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) coming second, and Mr. Peter Obi of the Labour Party (LP) coming third with 8,794,276, 6,984,520 and 6,101,533 respectively. Ukrainian President was among t...

The fate of Christianity in the face of increasing Islamic influence in Nigeria. - Chikeluba

Nigeria as a multi-religious country courts peace and tranquility in its social and political space, especially as positions of influence and power are equitably occupied by citizens across religious lines. Of the different religious groups in Nigeria, Christianity and Islam stand out as the predominant ones with significant number of citizens as adherents. It is always an unwritten rule that in our political space, allowances are made to balance the two prominent religious groups we have, despite the secular government we operate. This religious balancing is mostly seen at the national level, as States are usually mostly predominated by either of the two religions. Since 1999, with the commencement of the 4th republic, there has always been conformity with the unwritten religious balancing rule at the center. The then President Olusegun Obasanjo, a Christian had Alhaji Atiku Abubakar, a moslem as Vice President, with other prominent positions as well equitably assigned or occupied by ...

Marred 2023 Elections in Nigeria - Chikeluba

The elections in Nigeria since 1999, has always been characterized by ignoble acts of violence, thuggery and undue interference with the Rights of the people to truly decide who to govern them. From the time of Professor Maurice Iwu as the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) Chairman which was characterized by brazen acts of impunity to the time of Prof. Attahiru Jega, where a significant improvement in the credibility of INEC was seen, to the incumbent Prof. Mahmood Yakubu, whose most recent outing has been nothing short of abysmal, the story has been familiar to the electorates. The recent concluded Presidential election in Nigeria is nothing to write home about. This election easily ranks as the worst that Nigerians have seen so far, largely because, with the passage of time from the inception of INEC prior to 1999 election, reformations both in logistics, human factors and laws have been put in place to ensure increased credibility of polls. The most recent of such ref...
