The reality of Tinubu's Presidency: Expectations from the new President - Chikeluba

Image
President-Elect Bola Tinubu. May 29th is almost here, just a little more than 24hrs. Nigerians will be relishing the exit of President Muhammadu Buhari's administration, that in 8yrs inspired zilch towards the growth, unity and stability of Nigeria. With the incumbent administration's exit, comes the new government of Asiwaju Bola Tinubu, who would become the 16th citizen to have occupied the exalted position of national leader since 1960. President-Elect Tinubu, with Vice President-Elect Shettima. The 2023 elections have come and gone, with its dust yet to settle, as the PDP and the LP still have Court cases seeking for the nullification of Tinubu's declaration as President-elect by the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC). Post-election rhetorics from different angles weren't devoid of prophesies, as would ordinarily be expected in a multi-religious nation. However the reality starring Nigeria and the global community is the impending may 29th swearing in ...

Remembering Deborah Samuel - Chikeluba

Image
Deborah Samuel  It was on May 12th, 2022, that the State of Sokoto in Northern Nigeria trended nationally and internationally for the horrendous killing of Deborah Samuel, a Christian 200 level student of Shehu Shagari College of Education Sokoto. Deborah was inhumanely pursued, stoned and set ablaze by supposedly her fellow students, on the allegation that she committed blasphemy against the Islamic religion. She had kicked against posting of religious messages on a Whatsapp group created for academic purposes. That incident culminated into her being heinously murdered in broad daylight. Parents of Deborah  Nigerians, especially from the Southern part of the country, heavily criticized the killing. The Sultan of Sokoto, his eminence Muhammad Sa'ad Abubakar III, joined in criticizing the obnoxious act, as well as President Muhammadu Buhari, but then it was apparent to discerning Nigerians that the government of the day would not match words with actions in prosecuting the culp...

Peter Obi's influence on the Nigeria's political space. - Chikeluba

Image
Peter Obi  It was sometimes around 2003, while Anambrarians were scouting for who would replace the then Governor of Anambra, Chief Chinwoke Mbadinuju, after his first tenure in office that the aura of Peter Obi greeted the citizens of the State. A gentleman to the core, without the usual grandiose political attitude that identifies the usual Nigerian politician.  Peter captured the attention of Anambrarians with his simplicity and unconventional political style, especially as practiced in Nigeria. That led to Anambrarians massively voting for the All Progressive Grand Alliance (APGA), the Party Obi flew its flag. The election result was brazenly distorted, leading to the declaration of the PDP's Dr. Chris Ngige as Governor, an anomaly that Peter vowed to challenge using every available legitimate means. He never led his teeming supporters into riots or civil disobedience, in preference for his ideology. The Court processes was lengthy and presumably tortuous for the Obi team,...

Fuel subsidy and the Nigeria government's hypocrisy. - Chikeluba

Image
President Buhari and GMD NNPC, Mele Kyari.  Source: pmnewsnigeria Every Nigerian of age must have heard about the word "Subsidy". It was popularized in the media in 2012, when the entertainer and popular singer Flavor performed a song titled "Nigeria ebezina". This musical track was prompted by the sudden rise in price of the premium motor spirit (PMS), owing to the policy of the then President Goodluck Jonathan's administration that removed subsidy from the petroleum sector in the beginning of the new year 2012.  At that time, most people came to understand that the federal government was all along paying subsidy in order to keep the prices of fuel stable and affordable for citizens. Subsidy was introduced in the petroleum sector in the 1970's by the Gowon administration as a palliative to cushion the landing cost of petroleum products delivered to refineries. Since then, successive governments have continued the payment, throwing the nation into poverty an...
