Zelenskyy's invitation to Tinubu - Chikeluba
Any body who understands and follows political activities on the global stage would no doubt make interpretation as regards the invitation of the Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy to Senator Bola Tinubu, Nigeria's President-elect, to visit Ukraine after his inauguration on May 29th.
The flawed 25th February 2023, Presidential election in Nigeria has constrained responsible world leaders from outrightly putting forth congratulatory messages to Sen. Tinubu. Uptill now, the US President Joe Biden is yet to personally congratulate the Nigeria's President-elect, days and weeks after the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) declared the former Lagos State governor on the platform of the ruling All Progressive Congress (APC), as winner of the polls with Alhaji Atiku Abubakar of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) coming second, and Mr. Peter Obi of the Labour Party (LP) coming third with 8,794,276, 6,984,520 and 6,101,533 respectively.
Ukrainian President was among the early world leaders to send in congratulatory message to Tinubu, via his Twitter social media handle, a day after the declaration by INEC, a message that was greeted with sharp criticism from some Nigerian netizens. However such display of magnanimity can be said to be circumstantial.
The Ukrainian State has been engaged in almost a full blown war with Russia, a war which began on the 24th February 2022. Since then Ukraine has been courting the global community in its bid to defend its State, and protect its sovereignty. Even while at war, it's commendable to know that Ukraine has demonstrated good administrative capacity in maintaining most of their infrastructures and government functions.
Ukraine thus needs the support of its Western allies, as well as Africa's support at the United Nations, to continue its fight against Russia, hence the overture to Tinubu. A visit to Ukraine by the incoming Nigeria's President after May 29th, will be a clear international affirmation that Nigeria is in solidarity with Ukraine. That will ultimately sum up the intentions of the Ukrainian leader at this time
A whole lot of Nigerians expressing disgust or lack of approval for Zelenskyy's maneuvers should sheath their swords, Ukraine needs to survive.
